Along the Trail - 4 beach spots where you can escape Bondi’s crowds

Bondi is probably the first name you will hear when searching for spots to cool off in Sydney this summer and whilst the crisp, refreshing pacific water is worth a visit, there’s a good chance you will be swimming through a crowd of people as tourists and locals alike will flock to the world-famous stretch of sand as soon as the temperature begins to rise.

However, one of the best aspects of #Bondi, in my opinion, is its accessibility to other beaches. So no need to worry if you find yourself unable to see the sand under the thousands of towels plastered over Bondi, there are four other pristine shores within walking distance along the beautiful Bondi to #Coogee coastal walk that will give you the same experience. Most of these beaches can be accessed by public transport however, I believe that the march through Sydney’s looming sea cliffs is a part of Sydney’s coastal beauty that should not be missed.

Tamarama

This smaller shoreline is tucked between the two jutting headlands between Bronte and Bondi. Whether it be beach volleyball or surfing, #Tamarama is an ideal beach for those searching for activity. Surfers will especially enjoy the nature of Tamarama, as wind conditions and ocean depth create an ideal environment for powerful waves to surge. Swimmers and beachgoers should be cautious, however, as Tamarama lifeguards perform the most rescues annually. Despite its chaos, Tamarama is still worth a visit along the coastal trail as it will provide you with a classic panorama of the eastern Sydney coastline.

Bronte

I’ve always considered #Bronte to be a more toned-down version of Bondi, making it critically underrated to tourists who choose the former. Only a half-hour walk from Bondi or a quick bus ride on the 350 from Bondi Junction, Bronte is highly accessible to all.

If you’re exploring the coast from start to finish, a dip at Bronte is either a refreshing break before you continue to Coogee or a perfect way to end a shorter hike. Natural rock formations from ocean cliffs have allowed for the Bronte Rock Pools to be installed. These baths are open year-round, provide a beautiful view of the pacific and are completely free to use, unlike the infamous Bondi Icebergs. Whilst I’m sure you came to Sydney to see the iconic Bondi stretch, take my advice and show Bronte some love too.

Clovelly

Keep pressing on from Bronte and you will find yourselves at one of Sydney’s most unique beaches. The actual beach itself is tiny and narrow, however, two opposing concrete platforms have been implemented on each side of the bay. These platforms are ideal spots for sunbathers and swimmers alike, and the lack of sand makes your trip to the beach a great deal cleaner. If you’re driving across Sydney, there is an accessible parking lot right next to the platforms which feature a dramatic view out into the ocean. Otherwise, the 339 bus goes to #Clovelly from the Royal #Randwick light rail stop.

Another reason to visit Clovelly is its explosive wildlife scene. Despite being a 15-minute drive from the CBD, the bay is teeming with Australian marine life due to the protected reef and underwater vegetation. I highly recommend bringing snorkels with you on a trip to this hidden treasure. Once you’re done exploring, stop by Seasalt Cafe just a few meters from the water or take a dip in the saltwater pool. Despite its size, Clovelly has something to satisfy every beachgoer’s needs.

Gordon’s Bay

The water at #Gordon's Bay reflects a crystal-clear turquoise and is surrounded by cascading rock pools. No wonder why I and so many other Australians hold this hidden oasis so close to our hearts. Gordon’s Bay is nestled between Clovelly and Coogee, making it the last beach stop on our journey and as always, I’ve saved the best for last. Limited to pedestrian access only, you will find that Gordon’s Bay is a quaint, gentle bay and a perfect pit stop for your coastal walk experience. You will most likely not find crashing waves or hidden riptides like at Bondi, making Gordon’s Bay a top spot for safe swimming. You will therefore find families and young bathers alike enjoying the water. And of course, my most important piece of advice when visiting Gordon’s is to take lots of photos. The pristine water quality, vegetation and tranquillity will make you look like you’re in paradise when in reality you’re only 20 minutes out of the city! However, these hidden beaches do turn Sydney into a paradise of its own.
