Free Climb - Sydney’s Top Bouldering Spots

If you’re a fan of traditional rock wall #climbing, or simply looking for an active #indoor #activity to learn during our third rainy summer, I urge you to step into Sydney’s diverse and plentiful #bouldering landscape. If you’ve never heard of #bouldering, it’s just like rock #climbing, however, you have no harness meaning the wall will never reach above 4 meters. Free climbing a wall can seem frightening at first, however, when you step into the #gym you will soon realise that #bouldering is less about reaching dizzying heights and puts more of an emphasis on the route you take to reach the top. As someone who is afraid of heights and therefore could never properly enjoy traditional #climbing, #bouldering became the perfect recreation for me to improve my #fitness and #climbing skills. Another bonus is that #bouldering can be enjoyed with a group of friends or as a solo outlet as you don’t need anyone to belay you! If #bouldering sounds like something you want to take up in Sydney, you’re in luck as there has been a recent explosion of hip warehouse #gyms that will ensure your climbing experience is one to remember. With so many to choose from, I’ve compiled a list of my personal favourites.

9 Degrees

Waterloo:

Alexandria:

Lane Cove:

Parramatta:

(Chatswood coming soon!)

With numerous locations scattered throughout Sydney, 9 Degrees is the perfect #climbing #gym for beginners and pros alike. With 8 separate route difficulties, you can tackle extremely tame green routes before working your way to the near-impossible white routes. Moreover, 9 Degrees has a large team that scrambles the routes every week! That means each weekly visit to the #gym will be unique. Featuring a #cafe onsite, you can take a #coffee break whilst strategising climbs whilst enjoying high-quality #coffee. Like most #bouldering gyms, 9 Degrees is also #dog friendly at all locations, so bring your pooch along to watch you climb!

Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym

Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym is one of Sydney’s largest indoor recreation centres. Their #bouldering section is relatively new, showcasing how the venue is alert to shifts in #climbing trends. Located above the traditional #climbing walls, you can find a wide range of challenging routes that will surely leave your arms aching. The best thing about Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym is that you can also try your hand at traditional rock #climbing, rope climbing and #fitness #classes such as #yoga. If you’re someone who loves variety during their climbing trips, defiantly try Sydney’s staple climbing centres.

Moreover, Climb Fit features a plethora of #social #events that run weekly, ensuring that you can easily slide into the welcoming #climbing community. #Social climbs run every Friday night at both locations and if you’re a #student, be sure to take advantage of $12 entry and free climbing shoes, one of the best #student #deals on this list! If you’re looking for a friendly #climbing centre that features traditional walls and an extensive bouldering range, Climb Fit may be the #gym for you.

Blochaus

This soothing #gym is tucked away behind the warehouses and factories of #Marrickville. But don’t let the seemingly empty exterior fool you, as you step into Blochaus you will be greeted by smiley staff and an overwhelming variety of routes to choose from. Similar to 9 Degrees, Blochaus is for #bouldering only, with an open #cafe waiting to caffeinate you when you feel that climb fatigue starting to creep up. Blochaus also features a coloured route scale, however, there are fewer colours and the difficulty of each level tends to be a little bit harder than 9 Degrees. So if you’re hopping around #gyms like Sydney and looking for slightly more unforgiving routes, Blochaus is defiantly worth a shot.
