The other week I was pleasantly surprised to discover that #dumplings and #cocktails really do go well together thanks to The Drunk Dumpling in Newtown. Located right on King St, this restaurant has recently gained immense popularity due to its affordable #cocktails and authentic #Chinese cuisine.

As you walk up the dark staircase from the bustling streets of #Newtown, you will be taken into a low-lit loft with decor that is giving off a potential fine dining experience. Not to worry, however, as one of the main allures of The Drunk Dumpling is its affordable #cocktails. The drink menu gets further points for creativity as each signature #cocktail is named and inspired after each of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. When ordering ‘the Dragon’, I was not expecting a $12 #cocktail to come out literally on fire, however, this #restaurant’s commitment to their presentation truly makes it all the more memorable.

Onto the #food, I believe that the array of house-made #dumplings and other Cantonese dishes make the perfect sharing dishes for a date or dinner out with friends. Between myself and 10 other patrons for a birthday dinner, we managed to polish off Pecking Duck Pancakes, various fried rice dishes and stir-fried Singapore #noodles. However, we wouldn’t be getting the full Drunk Dumpling experience if we were only getting drunk without the dumpling part - so of course, we filled ourselves with their range of dim sum and #dumplings. Following the same pattern as their drinks, the dumpling menu is named after the twelve zodiac horoscopes. Although I am an Aries, the night I ate at Drunk Dumpling I was mostly a Taurus as the ‘Taurus Dumplings’ consisted of pan-fried Northern Chinese dumplings which I thought were the best out of all the ones we tried. However, no matter what your dumpling preference or horoscope is, it is worth grabbing a few friends to make your way through the full list as each dumpling is unique and guaranteed to satisfy your cravings.

Whilst #Sydney is not short of superb #Chinese cuisine, what sticks out to me most about The Drunk Dumpling is its alluring atmosphere and creative menu design. Furthermore, as a university #student, finding a nice #restaurant that doesn’t have the $$$ sign next to it on Google makes the venue all the more desirable. If you are looking for a quality dinner on a night out in #Newtown or planning a birthday #dinner with friends, look no further than this tucked-away gem on King Street - however, book fast as this place is understandably always at capacity!
